Crete: Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos - local trip
This inconspicuous little island located about 5 km from the center of Elounda is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Crete.
Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos is a trip called "the expedition to unusual place". Why? A visit to this tiny island is bound to make an incredible story. In the sixteenth century Spinalonga was inhabited by Venetians, who left behind an impressive fortress. This fortress remained unconquered for a very long time. In 1715 Spinalonga was taken over by Turks, who lived there until Greece regained its independence. The island, however, is best known for its leper colonies formed there in 1903-1957. Leprosy was a disease that people in those days feared the most, so the tiny island seemed like a perfect place to isolate the sick from the healthy. This is how Spinalonga has been witnessing human suffering for more than 50 years, caused not only by illness but also by separation, longing and isolation. At first, the existence of the exiled people was very difficult, but over time they began to build a substitute for normal life, like the one they had before arriving on the island. There was a cinema, theater and church. Shops and cafes were opened. People fell in love, got married and raised children.
On the island you can see the residential area of the former leper colony, st. George church, the cemetery and of course the Venetian fortress, which towers over the whole island. During the tour, our guide will familiarise you with the detailed history of this place. Those who would like to learn more should read Victoria Hislop's fascinating novel "The Island".
Another unique place to visit during our trip is Agios Nikolaos. Considered to be the most beautiful city in Crete and compared to the French Saint-Tropez, Agios offers visitors a fantastic atmosphere of a seaside resort. The picturesque lake around where colorful boats are anchored, countless small restaurants and a great viewpoint. All this makes Agios Nikolaos unforgettable so that it stays our memories for a long time.
